TWENTY-FOUR

KATRINA

Round two turns out to be a glorious idea.

And so does round three.

And round three-point-five.

After we spend five and a half hours going at it like teenage bunnies, we both contentedly drift off in the middle of a lazy big-spoon-little-spoon-sideways-slow-sex session.

Hours later, I wake with a loud yawn before remembering that I didn’t go to bed alone. I jolt, expecting to find a sexy, sleeping footballer sprawled out on my sheets next to me. But other than me and my tangle of blankets, the bed is completely empty.

Wearing nothing but a frown and Knox’s t-shirt, I jump out of bed and quickly regret it—I’m sore all over. Every single muscle cries out in sweet agony as I limp around my house. And Knox isn’t here. He’s not in the bathroom. Not in the living room. Not in the kitchen.

Movement outside catches my eye. I peek out the front window and spot a shirtless Knox dashing down the street.

My stomach drops. Wow. Seriously?

The man was so hellbent on ghosting me, he didn’t even bother to wake me up and get his shirt back. Well, that stings.

Anxiety expands inside my chest like helium filling up a balloon. “What did you expect, Katrina?” I mumble to myself. “You broke your own rules…”

I’m angry. Hurt. But mostly, I feel silly for allowing myself to be a rebound for another emotionally unavailable man. After that strategy blew up so epically in my face with my last relationship, you’d think I would have learned my lesson. But I thought that Knox was over his ex. It really seemed like it. Now, I see that I totally misread the situation. Again.

Gosh. What was I thinking?

Feeling dejected, I mosey on back to bed. It’s early, barely past sunrise, and even though I’m awake, I’m suddenly not in the mood to do anything but sleep. I climb back under my still-warm sheets and pull my favorite quilt up to my chin.

My mind spins and spins, and I scold myself until I start to drift off again. But just as I’m falling asleep, a noise sends me on full alert.

In my drowsy state, I sit up and hear the distinct sound of my front door opening. What the hell? Panic flooding my veins, I hop out of bed and frantically search for a weapon.

My bedside lamp is the first thing to catch my eye. Yes, lamps are always a good choice. Except, this one is plugged into an outlet that’s way behind my bed, and that just sounds like too much work.

Sorry—I don’t really wanna die with my head buried under my bed, and my ass sticking out like a target.

I opt for plan B. Darting around my room, I ignore my screaming thigh muscles as I grab my favorite brown suede bootie with a stiletto heel in one hand and my curling iron in my other tightly-closed fist.

Then I take post next to my bedroom door and prepare to fight for my life.

I can hear heavy footsteps in the living room below.
